Prince Hall Masonry, also known as Prince Hall Freemasonry, has a rich history rooted in the African American community and Freemasonry. It emerged during the 18th century, and its legacy continues to influence society today.
Historical Background
Prince Hall Masonry traces its origins to the late 18th century when Prince Hall, an African American and former slave, petitioned and was granted admission into a Freemason lodge in Boston. Due to racial prejudices, he and fellow African Americans were unable to join existing lodges, so they established their own lodge, African Lodge No. 1, in 1775.
